Slimming up for Summer!

Today I want to touch on what some might consider a "touchy" subject...it's the dreaded "w" word...

 weight

Yes, weight gain, weight loss...it's all I've been thinking about this last year {except for my amazing son, of course!}.  You've all read about my recent weight loss, but if you do the math, you know I still have about five pounds to go, and if I'm being really honest, I would love to lose closer to eight!  That would get me back to my pre-pregnancy weight, and hopefully {fingers crossed!} back into my pre-pregnancy jeans.

My weight loss journey has just NOT been easy for me postpartum.  For those of you who lost your pregnancy weight within months after having your baby, my hat is off to you.  In fact, some of you bloggers out there make the Hollywood stars look like slackers.  I was amazed to read how easily many of you dropped the baby weight and attributed it to breastfeeding and such.

I was absolutely convinced that if I watched my weight during my pregnancy and breastfed after, I would be in good shape too {literally!}, but that simply hasn't been the case.  Most people tell me I look great for just having a baby, but I know how my skinny jeans really fit.  And really, how long can I use the excuse of just having a baby?  It's been almost a year!  Besides, I don't want to look great for just having a baby...

I want people to stop in their tracks, as I'm carrying my son, and ask if I really did just have a baby because there's no possible way they can believe it!  ;)

Asking too much?  I don't think so!

{Flashback to fit, tan and happy on my honeymoon!}

With several weddings coming up this summer...and hello bikini season!...I don't have much time to kick it into gear.  Of course I plan to keep exercising and eating healthy meals, but I find I have the most success when I have simple guidelines to follow, like easy workout {and fast!} routines and having healthy snacks on hand.  I'm hoping with the farmer's markets going in full swing this summer, that will force me to buy fresh produce and stay away from carbs.  Also, when the sun doesn't set until late into the night, there's plenty of sunlight after work to go on walks or hikes...right?  Of course, the easier and faster the plan, the better.

Bottom lime: There's just really no excuse anymore...and I think the reality of a year has really set in. It's time to fulfill my weight loss goal and finally look like that mom.

So, what about you?  Please don't tell me I'm alone!  I'd love to hear why you're REALLY trying to lose those last couple of pounds.  Do you have a vacation coming up and want to be able to NOT photoshop the photos?  Reunion where just maybe you want to make an ex jealous?  C'mon. Spill the beans!

  1. I too just had a baby (a year ago in July) and was thinking this exact same thing the other day. I always come up with excuses for how I don't have time or am too tired to exercise when in reality, I definitely have at least 20 min to go on a walk. Thanks for sharing! Glad I'm not the only one in the boat :)

  2. im just about to have my first baby next month and i am already on the panic wagon with this! i feel like i am going to have to buy a whole new wardrobe, AGAIN. but really after these 9 months of blah - i want to be HOT! i want my husband to think DDDAAAAAMNNNN. too much?!

    ReplyDelete
  3. i also had a baby in February and want to lose the last 5-7lbs before the summer season hits and the wedding season! The problem is that I am still getting up 1-2x a night for feedings and on bad nights I am so tired the next day i want carbs and sweets!

  4. Girl, I'm with a! It's totally not as easy as it looks! My go-to has been walks with my girl!! Still have a little to go.

  5. i totally always wonder how some bloggers are instantly skinny the day after having a baby, it's crazy. good genes? we don't have kids yet but i hope i have that kind of situation. ha.

i'm trying to tone up for summer...it's hard. i need to kick it into gear!

  6. Girl you look amazing but I know how you feel. I would say it took me 9 months to feel back to normal. My sister on the other hand had lost all her weight by her 6 week check up- I mean what the hell. and funny thing is I worked out my whole pregnancy and after and she never does. This pregnancy I have loosed up the workouts alot just too tired. I am prepared for it to take time. It is hard for most of us so don't feel alone, you will lose those last 5-8lbs but trust me you do already look like that mom.

  7. what a great post natasha! thanks for being so open and honest.. i havent had children (YET) but the whole weight thing i something i worry about. i am dealing with weight gain after being sick for months. i was diagnosed with chrons earlier this year and i lost a lot of weight and i was too tired to work out so i lost muscle.I started taking medication and after a few months i am feeling SO much better BUT i am trying to learn NOT to snack all the time. in the past i thought i needed to gain weight so i would supplement my meals with snacks. i will have to deal with chrons for the rest of my life -- its a chronic disease -- but i am working on building muscle again. at the end of the day i just want to be healthy so its a balance act we all have to deal with. good luck with your workout goals and dont focus too much on the number -- focus on how you FEEL. mucho love to you! xoxo

  9. whoops! my first comment didnt post. here it goes again! thank you natasha for being so open and honest with your fitness journey! i havent had children (yet) but i do worry about the whole weight gain thing. this year i have been struggling with weight and muscle loss (due to my crohns diagnosis). i got pretty sick and had zero energy to workout and i was told to eat as much as i could to recoup what i was losing. So i got into the habit of snacking a lot...now a few months later i am on medication and i am feeling better but i have to focus on making healthier eating and fitness habits. weight loss and gain is something we all have to figure out. just try not to focus on the number -- focus on how you feel. good luck chickadee. xoxo

  10. Natasha, I think you look great! But I totally understand the feeling. I want to look good...not just good for having just had a baby too. But let's be real...I wasn't super skinny to start with. I have a few more pounds to loose too but mostly just want to tone up so that I can stop having to suck in my stomach all the time!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well I think you look freaking amazing and would kill to have your figure! I've got the post baby body blues too so I get the feeling. Even though most the weight is gone, I feel soft and jiggly all over.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I feel like I'm going to be JUST like you -- have most of the weight come off, but be left with exra weight just staring me in the face. You really do look amazing and I'd never guess that you had more weight to lose (honestly), but I totally get what you're saying. All of these bloggers that lose the weight before their baby is even 1 month old are kinda getting on my nerve, lol! All of my baby weight is found on my ass and thighs... my life-long problem area. Ugh! You're so close, and with your outlook and motivation, I'm sure you'll have the last lbs off before you know it :)

  13. Thanks for writing this! I'm so sick of hearing that breastfeeding was the reason someone lost all their baby weight in 3 months. My baby just turned 1 and I'm still 15 lbs away from my goal. I've told myself that I will not get pregnant again until I lose the weight. I don't want to get caught in a downward spiral and end up 30 pounds overweight and miserable. Here's to an active and healthy summer!

  14. i think you look AMAZING. but i'm totally in the mommy camp where it was down right hard for me to lose weight after baby. my daughter is 15 months old now and i'm at my pre-pregnancy weight BUT not my body (damn that fine toning and sculpting). good thing the babes are cute and 100% worth it- otherwise id be a wreck!

    ReplyDelete
  15. My son turns 1 on Aug 23rd and although I'm at my pre-pregnancy weight, my pre-pregnancy body is NOWHERE to be found! Time to get my butt in the gym and get it back to what it used to be! You look great and will have those last lbs gone before you know it! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with all the above, you look great and I'm a little jealous of your 5-8 lbs you have to lose! lol. I have about twice that! :( I'm 8 months post-partum, had a hard time with breastfeeding and low supply so I just didn't lose all that much weight. Monday I'm recommitting myself for the long haul because I'm sick of not feeling comfortable in my own skin. I want to be a hot mom too! haha. My biggest motivation is being where I want to be by the big 3-0 in September! Good luck to you!

  17. My bubbbba just turned 5 months and I'm still needing 10 pounds to go back to pre-pregger days. I completely understand where you are coming from on those few pounds....those are the hardest to take off. I wish you all the best.

  18. I'm wanting to lose a few pounds for my friend's wedding in a couple of months. Not to mention, it would be nice to fit into a two piece again :)

  19. I really do think you look great, but I know what it's like to just want to feel good for yourself! People can tell you how wonderful you look all they want but if you don't actually believe it yourself then it's a moot point! :)

Summer always helps when you can get outside more. Advocare has really helped me tighten up and reach my health/fitness goals!

  20. I hit a major plateau and I jumped right off of it when I cut out dairy. You'd be amazed at how much you really don't need or miss it after about a week. Seriously try it for those last stubborn pounds!!

  21. I haven't been able to fit into a lot of my cute work clothes in well over a year now, talk about discouraging! I just don't feel confident when I walk into that office every day, and I miss that feeling! I'd love to lose about 12-15 pounds and be a healthier, more confident me!!

  24. You look amazing! It may not happen as fast as you'd like, but hard work and dedication pays off in the long run. You know I'm trying to shed some lbs too and I really noticed the difference when I learned to eat healthy the right way, crazy I know. Keep it up! Let me know if you ever need a walking buddy.

  25. I agree with Laura! You are beautiful my friend!! I know how you feel but just know that all of your friends think you are that HOT mom already! And can only hope we look like you after having a baby!! And just know that when we are up on the boat with you at some point this summer - my body will look like the one that just had a baby. Unfortunate fact! xoxo

  26. You look amazing! I have not had a baby but have been on a journey to lose weight for quite a while, I recently wrote about it. http://a-can-do-attitude.blogspot.com/2013/05/life.html. I had so many excuses, mostly I didn't want to try to lose weight for fear of failing. This morning I finished a 6 week boot camp series where I food journaled and lost 16 pounds. I think the single biggest game changer for me is food journaling with the my fitness pal app. I am no where near as small as you, but I'm working on it.

  27. Well, I'll chime in here with the others and say how GREAT and GORGEOUS I think you look! But I also know that we are our own worst critics, and every compliment in the world sometimes isn't enough to balance out our own perceptions. I, too, did not just 'drop' my baby weight by breastfeeding and eating healthily, though I thought that would happen. (I secretly want to despise the women who did, but ok, that's just mean. :) My body, for whatever reason, needed to hold onto that last 5 lbs as long as I was breastfeeding, and my boob-happy little 14-month-old just wasn't ready to wean completely. I gradually got back into a regular running routine, with my hubby's help since he is 'on duty' while I hit the trails, and that definitely helped. I also signed up for a half marathon (I've done a few + 2 full marathons pre-baby) and figured that would force me to stick to a training plan. It did. I was within 3 lbs of my pre-preg weight, and then as luck (??) would have it, a month ago I became pregnant with #2 (surprise?!). I'm really really hoping my weight gain this pregnancy is gradual and peaks out where I was with #1, which was a reasonable amount all in all. Oh well! We are thrilled to be expecting again, especially since the first go of it took us 2 years! This time through, however, I vow to be more diligent with working out, even low impact, to stay in better shape and bounce back sooner after delivery. I was able to run my half marathon last weekend even feeling a bit queasy, but I plan to keep the running at a moderate rate moving forward. Good luck to you and everyone else here!

  28. I'm trying to get to the gym and eat more healthily. I'm still nursing, but when I'm done, I'm tempted to try the Dr. Oz cleanse that you blogged about. My night time snacking is outta control...twizzlers, pretzels, chocolate etc! I would absolutely love a spafinder card!

    ReplyDelete
  29. You do look fantastic! But I totally understand. I bought a bunch of really cute bathing suits (and kinda pricey ones at that) for my honeymoon last year in Hawaii. Now, I'm back home and back into a routine and those super cute bathing suits are just sitting in my drawers, only been worn once. No fun there! So I want to lose the weight so I can rock those bikini's again (and not be asked if I'm pregnant, geez). I think with accountability and support, anything is possible! But there are no short cuts and no quick fixes, healthy eating and working out. That's where we're gonna go.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You look great! But I'm totally with you and MY baby is 20 months old!! I've still got 5-8 lbs that need to come off, even though I can fit into all my pre baby clothes. I'm not as fit as I used to be and need to work on that! I've been eating "clean" for at least two months and trying to step up workouts, but my husband and I work opposite of each other to try to keep her out of child care as much as possible, so I have to do a lot of running- with a stroller AND two dogs... ha! And Jillian DVDs after she's in bed. She's also still nursing, only once per day but I think nursing made me keep weight on. I think the whole breastfeeding helps you lose weight is a myth for many of us, and my LC agrees. She says as soon as my LO is fully weaned the lbs will fall off. I also recently had all my bloodwork redone. I'm just SO tired all the time. My vitamin D levels are in the toilet and that can really affect weight, mood, and energy. Good luck, we can all do this together!!

  31. You and I are in the same boat. My baby girl is creeping up on one year and I'm still holding on to 15 pounds eeek. I EBF and I agree, it's not a magic weight loss pill. If anything, it makes me eat like crazy. I would love to lose the last 15 before her birthday so I look good in her bday pics.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Uhhh I am RIGHT there with you, and as our boys are just days apart, I understand how it feels to be at the one year mark, and not where you want to be. I know I can hide it under jeans and the right top, but I'm not like I used to be.. put anything on and walk out the door. There's nothing to hide. Now, dread putting on a bikini. I tried them all on the other night and things weren't quite right. Definitely wasn't ready for the beach! I don't know if I'm trying to lose weight or just tone at this point. And maybe I'll never be QUITE the same. But I want to be THAT mom too. The one we all hate. :) Interested to see what you end up sharing as far as this journey goes. My plan is to starve on super healthy foods and do 2-3 walks or light workouts a day. I figure the baby is the perfect excuse to get outside and walk a ton of hills. Good luck. We can do this! And for the record, I think you looked remarkably well right away, and look great now.

Although my even though my youngest is 8 weeks (this Sunday), and I am down to my pre pregnancy weight...nothing fits quite right. It's time to get my body moving. Here's hoping for sleep to have the energy to move!

  35. I had my son 10 months ago and I still have 40 pounds to go. I can't believe how much weight I gained and I am so depressed that it is taking so long to come off. I want the weight to come off so badly because I don't want the only pics of my son's first year to be with his father. I hate looking at pictures of myself! I've taken some with him because I know I'll regret it but I really don't like most of them. Sigh.

  37. Oh, this is near and dear to my heart because in a matter of a few short months, I'll be right back in your shoes...for the third time! But last time I was in my 20's and now I'm in my 30's...I'm finding there is a big difference! But I am thinking the exact same as you, I don't want to look good for "just having a baby", I want to be a hot mama! (c; Thanks for the candid post, it always helps so much to know you're not alone!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read your post and kept going "yep, me too!" I just had a baby 6 months ago and while the scale reads the same as what it did before bambino, my skinny jeans apparently missed the memo! But sometimes carving out time to work out -- especially if it means potentially missing out on those toothless baby grins -- just isn't going to happen! I'll be anxiously reading to see how you get on (as well as scooping lots of tips for my own "operation hot mama" campaign!) Good luck!!

  39. I had my baby five months ago. I quickly losts most of my pregnancy weight - but have been hanging around to these 10 stubborn pounds. Plus my mid section isn't as toned as it used to be. I would love to feel beautiful again!

  40. I just had my third baby, three months ago, and this weight loss venture is getting harder with each kid! Sadly I'm on vacation now and this is the most I have worked out with extra hands to help watch the kids, let's see what happens next week when I'm back on my own flying solo with the kids. Just want to get back to my healthy self soon---and by the way!

  41. While the scale says I've lost the baby weight, the way I look says no. The post-baby flab is still there regardless of what the scale says. It is frustrating! Good luck on your journey--you looK great!

  43. I have an 8 month old and I'm trying for my second. I gained so much weight with my first that I felt like I was living in somebody else's body and I didn't recognize myself anymore. In a rash move I went and sold all my old sexy jeans to a clothing reseller because I thought I could never look like that again and I was sick of the reminders. Now I feel like I could do it (and want to have a head start for baby #2) and I want to see myself the way I used to be before I go and destroy my body a second time.

  45. You are NOT alone! I really didn't work hard at all the first 6 months and was dealing with getting control of myself and my little world while suffering with anxiety and ppd. After my little guy turned 6 months I bought books for motivation and really started to look at my lifestyle as far as eating and working out and got on board with a plan. So far I have lost 6.5 lbs and am a month and a half in. I'm hoping I can keep that up because in October my guy turns a year and I have my 10 year class reunion and I CANNOT go there looking like this!! I also want to look good and feel good when he turns one because at that point I really should have lost a decent amount because he's a year, right? It is just a lot of work for me and mental strength. Not just breastfeeding. Oh well! Good luck mama!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I am right there with you. I have NO idea how people lose the weight so quickly?!?! I had to work at losing the baby weight, I gained 33lbs! I didn't lose any weight breast feeding in fact the weight stayed there because I was always hungry still. As soon as I was done breastfeeding that is when I changed my diet. What really worked for me was changing my diet big time but, it has become a lifestyle change. I cut out all processed carbs 6 days a week and give myself 1 cheat day a week to help me, well not cheat everyday or go back to my old ways. Also, I am just finally working out 5 days a week, I wake up before my hubby or 10month old get up so it doesn't affect anyone's time. You look great and I just tell myself it takes time and it's kinda like a job you (I) have to work at it...unfortunately:(

    ReplyDelete
  47. I lost my weight very, very slowly. I just wasn't in a big hurry. One of the unique things I did was to try on clothes instead of stepping on the scale...it seemed to help. : )

You are so pretty to begin with, it doesn't even matter! Hope you have a great weekend!

  48. I think you look AMAZING, even better than me and I get that all the time the "omg you just had a baby" but I think its because I look like im 16 instead of 21 haha! My weight took 10 months to completely come off and for me to look the same as before, I can't believe it when I see girls who gave birth a month ago and they are a STICK!

    ReplyDelete
  49. You look amazing but I know the feeling! I had a baby 2 months ago and most of the weight fell off but still have 10-15 pounds left. So many people seemed to have lost their weight by this point but I know mine is going to take longer. Pregnancy and having the baby are so hard that you wish you could just go back right away! It just isn't fair!!! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  50. You are definitely not alone! I remember thinking the weight would just 'fall off' because of breastfeeding because that's what everyone told me would happen. So not the case for me! And it's not like I'm pounding cheeseburgers and not watching what I eat! It's been a long nine-month journey since my Ethan was born and I, too, finally said enough is enough. People may say you 'look' good, but I want to FEEL good too! It is about the way your clothes fit - and the way the weight might've shifted to another part of your body! My husband and I just started Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred (didn't you do this too?) so I'm hoping this will be a good kickstart heading into the summer. In a weak moment, do I look at other mommies that 'just' had a baby and scowl in jealously? Haha, I'd be lying if I said it never happened! I have noticed that I'm allowing myself to realize the journey my body has been on - and trying to find the happy medium between 'pre-wedding Jamie' (when everyone looks their best) and 'post-baby Jamie'. Good luck as you find your happy medium too! Keep talking about it and know you are supported by family, friends, and blogger friends! =)

  51. I gained 35 lbs with my son, who was born in February. I left the hospital 20 lbs lighter, no kidding. I was sure that since that weight fell off, the last 15 lbs would melt! Two weeks later, I was down another 10 lbs. I thought it was too easy... and it was. 4 months later, I'm stuck with those darn 5 lbs! And they're enough to bump me up into number I'm not comfortable with. So I want to lose them, plus another 15 or so to be my ideal weight. I'm thankful I'm still considered healthy, or "normal", but I want to lose it for me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I gained almost 20 lbs. after I got married and this year I became dedicated to getting back in shape. I've lost almost 15 lbs. and I feel great! I'd still like to lose those last 5 lbs, so I've been watching what I eat and exercising. I think running has been the workout that I've seen the most results from. And I feel like a total bada$$ when I'm done. Too bad taking 3 weeks off has put me back out of running shape, I really need to get back to it.

  68. It's summer time and I just want to look good in my swimming suit when I hit the beach with the family! plus, don't want people to think I'm "still pregnant" when my baby's due date was four years ago! hahaha....

  70. I found your blog by looking for reviews of Dr. Oz's 3 day cleanse... and kept reading. :) Sadly, I kept about 10 lbs on after each pregnancy and 3 kids later I am about 30 lbs over where I was pre-kiddos. I applaud you for working to get that extra weight off now as my challenge is quite a bit larger. Would love to get back into some of my old clothes though! the_wengers at hotmail dot com

  80. I am not sure if my reason is crazy. I am doing a lot of my weight loss these days in memory of my friend, Allen, who died in March. He had lost 125 lbs before passing, and he had started an amazing fitness blog to chronicle his loss. He was going to mentor me on the week that he died.... so now I do it and think of him often.

  91. I'd love to be able to be confident enough to go out swimming with the family. There's a Great Wolf Lodge nearby and my daughter has been wanting to go. *sigh* I have so much weight to lose it looks like weight loss surgery is the answer for me. However, maybe it's not..I've got two family members that have botched surgeries and horrible effects from it all. I wish I was one of those naturally skinny people.

  93. I was one of those lucky women who lost all the baby weight right away. After 5 children I was only 7 pounds over my wedding weight. Now I feel like a blimp. When I hit 40 the pounds started piling on. I have way more than just a couple of pounds to lose.
