Book Review: What Remains + Heads in Beds

I've been on a roll in 2013...I've successfully read two books so far!  And yes, I know it's only February, but if I can average a book per month, then I would consider that a success.  I know I get inspired by recommendations from other bloggers...so perhaps these reviews will inspire you, while also keeping me accountable.  Let's begin...

I've had What Remains by Carole Radziwell on by bookshelf for a while.  In case you're not familiar with who the author is, she's one of the Real Housewives of New York.  And no, that's not why I decided to read this book, though I do like her a lot on the show.  I wasn't sure if it would be a worthwhile read, but I was intrigued by her background with regards to John F. Kennedy Jr and his wife.  I knew {from the show} that they were friends, but I had no idea how close they were.  The opening of the book is haunting...she recalls the night of the plane crash and everything she was thinking...where she was...and what they must have been thinking in their last moments.  Her whole life changed in three minutes...which is no longer than the average news segment--a length of time that otherwise seems so insignificant   Three weeks later, her husband {a prince!} loses his battle to cancer.  It turns out the reality star is a stunning writer and storyteller...and my heart breaks for all that she went through and endured.  I highly recommend this story...she tells it beautifully.

I read a review of Heads in Beds in People magazine and was instantly intrigued.  The author works in the hotel industry and dishes on all the dirty secrets of the business while also passing along hints and tips for hotel guests.  It has forever changed my view of how I'll stay at a hotel...and will maybe even give me an advantage on my next hotel stay!

So, what book should I read next?  Have any recommendations?!

  6. Gone Girl (If you haven't read it yet), In the Garden of Beasts (If you like history), his other one is really good too Devil in the White City (also historical and definitely creepy, it's a about a serial killer), but it's gripping. The Curious Case of the Dog in the Nighttime (it's about an autistic boy, it's really interesting). I'm definitely jotting your recs down too, need some new ones! :)

  10. I loved Carole on the show, and I read some of her blog posts and thought she was an excellent and interesting writer even on those. She has so much more depth than most of the other ladies (I mean not to say I'm not entertained by them! hah). I'm definitely putting her book on my list! I agree with others that Gone Girl was excellent.

  20. I've recently discovered Jane Green and have enjoyed two of her novels: Another Piece of My Heart and The Beach House! I also read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn that was really good and my all time favorite is probably Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. I have a "Read with Me" album on my blog's Facebook page if you ever need new book ideas!
